Xerta Sheikh Aadan Dheere is a traditional Somali religious complex, the word xerta denoting a teaching circle or zawiya attached to a revered shaykh, founded in honour of Sheikh Aadan Dheere, a figure of local veneration in the Mogadishu region of Somalia. The country's religious landscape has been shaped for centuries by the Qadiri and Ahmadi Sufi orders, whose scholars travelled between pastoral settlements and coastal towns teaching Qur'an, jurisprudence of the Shafi'i school, and the litanies of the turuq. A xerta is distinct from an ordinary neighbourhood masjid in that it combines prayer with study, dhikr gatherings, and often residence for students of knowledge who come to sit at the feet of the shaykh or his successors for months or years. At Xerta Sheikh Aadan Dheere, the rhythm of the day is more layered than at a simple masjid: the five obligatory prayers are performed in congregation, but around them grow circles of recitation, readings of classical texts such as the Risala of Ibn Abi Zayd or simplified commentaries on the Qur'an, and gatherings at which the mawlid of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم is read with verses of praise from the Barzanji and other beloved compositions. Somali religious life leans warmly toward these practices, which its scholars have long defended as being within the bounds of orthodoxy and as expressions of love for the Messenger. Visitors fortunate enough to be invited to a gathering should sit respectfully on the mats, accept any tea or food offered with the right hand, and refrain from leaving before the closing du'a has been pronounced. Photography is generally unwelcome in the xerta itself and should not be attempted. Dress should be particularly modest; women should ensure covering that meets the stricter standards observed in such traditional settings, and every visitor should follow the lead of local attendees in matters of posture and participation throughout the programme. Students of the xerta who have travelled from elsewhere in Somalia sometimes wear distinctive white garments during study sessions, a visible sign of their commitment to disciplined learning.
