Tentang

In the heart of Mogadishu's Banaadir district sits Masjidka Isbahaysiga, also known by its Arabic name Jami' al Tadamun al Islami, the Mosque of Islamic Solidarity, a landmark that has carried its congregation through decades of upheaval, rebuilding, and patient renewal of Somali religious life. Somalia's Islamic history stretches back to the seventh century when companions of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, sought refuge in the Horn of Africa, and Mogadishu itself grew as a merchant city with scholars linked to the coastal centres of Zeila, Barawa, and later Harar. The name Isbahaysiga, meaning solidarity in Somali, was chosen to reflect the masjid's role in bringing together neighbourhoods divided during the difficult years of conflict, offering a shared space for prayer, reconciliation meetings, and charitable coordination for families displaced within the city. Architecturally the building combines a whitewashed exterior with arched arcades inspired by the coral stone mosques of the East African littoral, a tall minaret visible from several blocks away, and an airy interior whose ceiling fans move the sea breeze through the prayer hall. The mihrab is finished in carved plaster bearing Qur'anic verses in thuluth script, and the minbar is a simple wooden structure polished by decades of Friday khutbahs. Daily congregations are steady, drawn from shopkeepers, university students, civil servants, and returning diaspora Somalis rebuilding homes in the neighbourhood. Jumu'ah prayers often fill the forecourt, and the khutbah is delivered in Somali with Arabic recitation. Ramadan transforms the masjid into a centre of communal iftar, with traders contributing sambusas, canjeero bread, and camel milk for those ending their fast. The mosque also supports local orphan sponsorship, Qur'an memorisation classes, and burial services for families without resources. Visitors are welcome with respectful dress and mindful behaviour, keeping in mind the delicate security situation that still shapes daily movement in the city. Scholars trained in Khartoum, Cairo, and the traditional Somali schools of dugsi and ma'had teach regular evening circles in tawheed, tajweed, and Somali Islamic history for young adults seeking to reconnect with the intellectual heritage that flourished along the Horn before the civil war. The mosque also operates a small literacy programme for women who lost schooling during the conflict and wish to read the Qur'an in Arabic and communicate in written Somali.
