Tentang

Ali Jimale Mosque is another of Mogadishu's numerous masjids that carry the name of a person, in this case combining the common Muslim name Ali with the Somali family name Jimale. Whether the Ali Jimale commemorated was the founding benefactor, a beloved imam of previous generations, or a community elder whose memory the neighbourhood wished to preserve, the naming speaks to a characteristic pattern of Somali religious life: the continuity between a masjid and the individuals whose lives made it possible. Somalia's capital is a city whose story is often told in terms of its ruptures, but at the level of daily worship and the dense network of small masjids that serve its neighbourhoods, continuity is arguably the stronger theme and the more honest one. Worshippers whose grandfathers prayed in Ali Jimale Mosque still come at Fajr and Maghrib; imams pass responsibility to younger scholars trained in the same Shafi'i tradition; children learn the Qur'an nearby and one day bring their own children to the very same rows. The building itself is unadorned, a modest rectangular prayer hall, a mihrab and mimbar, a wudu area tiled against the coastal humidity, and a short minaret whose loudspeaker now carries the adhan further than the unamplified voice once did. Friday prayers bring the largest gathering of the week and require the extension of mats into the courtyard and sometimes onto the lane outside. Outside of prayer times, the masjid may host small Qur'an classes for children in the late afternoon and occasional gatherings of elders for consultation on matters affecting the neighbourhood. Visitors should behave as they would in any community masjid: entering quietly, removing shoes, dressing modestly, and keeping photography to a minimum or avoiding it entirely. Greetings exchanged in salaam will be warmly returned, and any questions directed to the imam will meet a patient and courteous response from a man well used to receiving enquiries. The imam's office, tucked beside the entrance, serves as a small consulting space where families seeking marriage contracts or inheritance rulings meet him in the calmer hours of the afternoon.
