Dugsiyada Imam Malik is a Qur'anic school in Mogadishu, Somalia, named after the great Imam Malik ibn Anas, the Madinan jurist whose Muwatta remains one of the earliest and most revered compendiums of Prophetic practice in the entire corpus of Islamic scholarship. In Somali educational culture the dugsi is the bedrock institution: it is where a child's Islamic formation begins, usually from the age of four or five, with the slow and patient memorisation of the Qur'an from a wooden lawh that is washed and rewritten each day as progress is made. Dugsiyada Imam Malik carries forward this centuries-old pattern at the heart of Somalia's capital. Mornings at the school begin before the sun clears the rooftops, with the combined recitation of dozens of children weaving into a living tapestry of verses from Surat al-Baqarah, Al Imran, and the shorter chapters that form the foundation of every young Muslim's memorisation. Teachers, known as macalimiin, guide the pupils one verse at a time, correcting vowels, elongations, and the points of articulation with a firmness softened by affection and long familiarity. In naming the school after Imam Malik, the founders signalled an orientation toward classical Sunni learning, though most Somali dugsis follow the Shafi'i madhhab for matters of fiqh. Alongside rote memorisation the pupils absorb the rudiments of tajwid, the essential du'as for daily life, and episodes from the biography of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم. For parents in Mogadishu, sending a child to a respected dugsi is among the most enduring gifts they can give. Visitors with an interest in Islamic education, especially those working in community development or writing on the educational heritage of the Horn of Africa, would find a tour, arranged respectfully through the school's administration, a deeply moving encounter. Observers should remain quiet, avoid disturbing the classes in progress, and refrain from photographing children without explicit consent from the school's leadership and the parents. Former students of the school, now themselves parents and professionals, often return to drop off younger relatives, creating a lineage of learning that the teachers take quiet pride in continuing.
