Tentang

ULU Moskee Rotterdam takes its name from the Turkish term ulu meaning great or grand, and invokes the tradition of Ulu Cami mosques that are found in virtually every significant town and city of Anatolia serving as the principal congregational mosque of their communities. Famous ulu camis in Turkey include the Ulu Cami of Bursa with its twenty domes, the Ulu Cami of Diyarbakir dating to the Great Seljuk period, and the Ulu Cami of Divrigi with its astonishing twelfth century carved portal now recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Naming a Rotterdam mosque Ulu connects it to this distinguished heritage of Anatolian congregational mosques and expresses the aspiration of its founders that it serve as a major focal point for Muslim worship in the Dutch port city. The mosque serves the Turkish Dutch community of Rotterdam, one of the largest Muslim populations in the Netherlands, with a full range of religious and community services. The prayer hall is carpeted and oriented toward the qibla, decorated with calligraphy in the classical Ottoman style and supported by columns and arches recalling traditional Anatolian mosque design. A mihrab, mimbar, and separate women's section ensure proper accommodation for worshippers, and ablution facilities serve the daily needs of the congregation. Programmes include the five daily prayers, Friday Jumuah gathering, Qur'an and tajwid classes, Turkish language schooling for children preserving heritage across generations, Dutch language support for newer arrivals, marriage and funeral services, zakat distribution, and welfare initiatives. Ramadan at ULU Moskee sees overflowing tarawih crowds, community iftars with Turkish specialties, Qur'an khatm sessions, and itikaf during the final ten blessed nights. The mevlid of the Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa alihi wa sallam is commemorated in traditional Turkish style with Suleyman Celebi Mevlid recitation enriching the devotional calendar. Friday sermons at ULU Moskee Rotterdam often draw lessons from the great Anatolian mosques whose architectural and scholarly heritage inspired the community's naming choice, with the khatib describing how each ulu cami across Turkey served not only as a place of prayer but as a centre of teaching, charity, and civic life, a model that the Rotterdam congregation aspires to emulate in its Dutch context with the resources and opportunities of its current setting.
