Tentang
Essalam Mosque Rotterdam stands as one of the most architecturally ambitious mosques in the Netherlands, dominating the skyline of its neighbourhood with a tall central dome and twin minarets that soar well above the surrounding apartment blocks. When it opened in the early 2010s after a long and sometimes politically sensitive construction period, it immediately became a point of reference for the country's Muslim population, and particularly for communities of Moroccan heritage in Rotterdam, who worked for decades to see it built. Functionally, the complex is a mosque, but its scale allows it to host gatherings that go far beyond daily salah. The central prayer hall can hold thousands of worshippers on Fridays and during the two Eids, while separate wings accommodate women's prayer, Qur'anic classes, seminars, interfaith meetings and the celebrations that accompany weddings, births and graduations. The mosque's interior blends contemporary Dutch engineering with traditional Islamic ornamentation: calligraphy bands stretch across the upper walls, geometric patterns frame the arches, and the carpet is laid out in rows oriented towards the qibla. Rotterdam's identity as a pluralist port city, rebuilt after the devastation of the Second World War, provides the backdrop against which the mosque has become a symbol of long-term settlement rather than a transient presence. Essalam organises educational programmes for children and adults, counselling for families, youth activities and targeted support during Ramadan, when nightly iftars feed large numbers and taraweeh prayers continue into the early hours. The leadership has invested considerably in dialogue with non-Muslim neighbours, opening the mosque for tours, discussions and guided visits that introduce curious visitors to the basics of Muslim worship and Dutch-Muslim life. For many Rotterdammers, the sight of Essalam's silhouette against a grey North Sea sky has become as familiar as the Erasmus Bridge or the Euromast. It is a place where Moroccan grandparents, Dutch-born children and newer arrivals from across the Muslim world all find a shared spiritual and communal ground. A particular effort is made to explain the Dutch civic context to newcomers, with volunteer-led sessions about schools, insurance, voting and workplace rights that transform Essalam into one of Rotterdam's most quietly effective civic-integration institutions.
