About

Moskee Othman in Rotterdam takes its name from Uthman ibn Affan radiallahu anhu, the third of the four rightly guided caliphs who led the Muslim ummah after the Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa alihi wa sallam. Uthman, a companion renowned for his modesty, generosity, and devotion, was the son in law of the Prophet twice over, having married two of his daughters Ruqayyah and then Umm Kulthum radiallahu anhuma, earning him the epithet Dhu al Nurayn, the Possessor of the Two Lights. He is credited with the great historical achievement of compiling the Qur'an into its standardised written form, ensuring that the revelation reached subsequent generations in a single authoritative mushaf. His caliphate oversaw the expansion of Muslim territories across North Africa, Persia, and the Caucasus, and his wealthy generosity funded the Muslim army at the battle of Tabuk and the expansion of the Prophet's Mosque in Madinah. Naming a mosque after this great companion invites worshippers to reflect on his virtues and legacy. The Rotterdam mosque serves a Muslim congregation of Turkish, Moroccan, or other backgrounds depending on its affiliation, with the standard complement of religious and community services including the five daily prayers, Friday Jumuah gathering, Qur'an classes, Islamic education for children, marriage and funeral rites, and welfare distribution. The prayer hall inside is carpeted and oriented toward the qibla, with a mihrab, mimbar, women's section, and ablution facilities. Ramadan brings nightly tarawih prayers, community iftars, Qur'an khatm sessions, and itikaf during the final ten blessed nights. Eid al Fitr and Eid al Adha festivities gather the congregation in joyful celebration. The name Othman stands as an enduring tribute to a companion whose compilation of the Qur'an made possible the worship performed in this and every mosque around the world. The weekly seerah classes at Moskee Othman dedicate substantial attention to the life of Uthman ibn Affan radiallahu anhu, from his early conversion through the most difficult persecutions to his marriage into the Prophet's family, his distinguished role in the hijrah to Abyssinia, his compilation of the Qur'an as caliph, and the painful trials of the fitnah that led to his martyrdom, drawing from his life the essential lessons of modesty, generosity, and patient endurance under tribulation.
