Gültepe Moskee in Rotterdam takes its name from Gültepe, a neighbourhood in Istanbul and also the name of several localities in Turkey, literally meaning the Rose Hill in Turkish and evoking a landscape of fragrant gardens. The name carries associations of beauty and natural blessing familiar to Turkish Muslims, and transferring it to a mosque in Rotterdam brings a piece of Turkish toponymic heritage to the Dutch urban environment. The mosque serves the Turkish Dutch community of Rotterdam, one of the largest Turkish diaspora populations in the Netherlands, with the five daily prayers, Friday Jumuah gathering, Qur'an and tajwid classes, Turkish language schooling for children, Dutch language and integration support for newer arrivals, marriage and funeral services, zakat collection and distribution, and welfare initiatives. The prayer hall inside the adapted building is carpeted and oriented toward the qibla, adorned with calligraphy in the classical Ottoman style naming Allah, Muhammad, and the rightly guided caliphs, and furnished with a mihrab, mimbar, and separate women's section. Ablution facilities serve the daily worshippers, and the building provides additional space for educational and community activities. Qualified teachers lead programmes in Qur'an recitation with tajwid, Islamic beliefs, and Turkish cultural heritage, preserving language and identity among the second and third generations born in the Netherlands. Ramadan transforms the mosque into a centre of nightly devotion with tarawih prayers, community iftars featuring Turkish culinary specialties, Qur'an khatm through the month, and itikaf during the blessed final ten nights. The mevlid of the Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa alihi wa sallam is commemorated in the traditional Turkish manner with the beautiful Suleyman Celebi Mevlid poem, and Kandil nights marking key dates in the Islamic calendar are observed with special prayers and reflection, bringing the full devotional heritage of Turkish Islam into the Dutch setting. Flowers and small gardens around Gültepe Moskee are carefully tended by volunteering aunties who have brought a piece of Turkish gardening tradition to the Dutch setting, planting roses, mint, and other beloved plants that thrive in Rotterdam's climate, so that the mosque's small outdoor spaces offer fragrance and beauty to worshippers arriving for prayer and fulfil the Prophetic encouragement to care for the earth as a trust from Allah.
