Essalam

Essalam in Rotterdam is the name borne by one of the largest purpose built mosques in the Netherlands, a monumental structure located in the Feijenoord district of southern Rotterdam serving the Moroccan and broader Muslim community of this major Dutch port city. Completed in the 2010s after years of planning and fundraising by the local Muslim community, Essalam features classical Moroccan architectural elements including green tiled domes, a tall minaret rising above the south Rotterdam skyline, intricate zellij tilework on the facades, and an expansive interior courtyard paved in traditional patterns. The main prayer hall is vast and airy, capable of accommodating thousands of worshippers during the Friday Jumuah gathering and major festivals, carpeted in rich green tones, oriented toward the qibla, and decorated with calligraphy and Moroccan plasterwork reflecting the heritage of Andalusi and Maghrebi Islamic art. A finely crafted mihrab of carved stone anchors the front of the hall, with a matching mimbar beside it from which the khatib delivers the Friday sermon. A separate women's prayer area on an upper level allows sisters full participation in worship, and ablution halls on both levels serve the peak crowds. Community facilities include classrooms for Qur'an and Arabic education, meeting rooms for committee work, a library of Islamic texts, kitchen and dining spaces for Ramadan iftars and celebratory meals, and parking for the many worshippers who travel by car. The mosque offers a full programme of religious and educational services including daily prayers, Jumuah, Qur'an classes, tajwid training, fiqh lessons, Arabic and Dutch language instruction, marriage and funeral services, and welfare distribution. Ramadan at Essalam is particularly magnificent, with overflowing tarawih crowds, large community iftars served in the dining halls, Qur'an khatm through the month, and itikaf during the blessed final ten nights. Eid prayers fill the courtyard with a sea of worshippers in celebration. Essalam's community kitchen operates year round, providing meals to homeless individuals, recent refugees, and isolated elderly in the Feijenoord neighbourhood regardless of their faith or background, a practical expression of the Islamic obligation to feed the hungry that the Qur'an describes as among the deeds that lift the believer toward paradise and that the mosque committee has made a cornerstone of its public mission.
