About

Centrum Middenweg in Rotterdam operates as a Muslim community centre whose Dutch name translates as the Middle Way Centre, invoking the Islamic concept of wasatiyyah, the moderate and balanced path that the Qur'an describes as the hallmark of the ummah when it declares we have made you a middle community that you may be witnesses over the people. The concept of the middle way has deep Islamic roots, encompassing balance between material and spiritual life, between this world and the next, between individual devotion and community service, and between strict religious observance and compassionate flexibility. A community centre named after this concept signals its aspiration to embody the balanced Islam that the Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa alihi wa sallam taught and lived. The centre in Rotterdam serves a diverse Muslim congregation drawn from various ethnic and national backgrounds with a full programme of religious and community services. Inside an adapted building, the centre houses a prayer hall carpeted and oriented toward the qibla, a mihrab, a mimbar, a women's prayer section, ablution facilities, classrooms for educational programmes, meeting rooms, and a small library. Activities include the five daily prayers, Friday Jumuah with khutbah in Arabic and Dutch, Qur'an recitation and tajwid classes, Arabic language lessons, children's Islamic education, Dutch language and integration support for newer immigrants, marriage and funeral services, welfare distribution, and youth programmes. Ramadan brings the centre to life with nightly tarawih prayers, community iftars, Qur'an khatm sessions, and itikaf during the blessed final ten nights. Eid celebrations fill the hall with worshippers in festive clothes exchanging greetings. The name Middenweg serves as a daily reminder to the congregation that the path of Islam is a balanced one, avoiding extremes and holding fast to the moderate way exemplified by the Prophet and his companions. Centrum Middenweg works in partnership with Dutch civic institutions on programmes addressing issues of youth education, family welfare, and interfaith dialogue, demonstrating how the Islamic principle of wasatiyyah can translate into constructive engagement with wider society while remaining rooted in authentic religious commitment, and the centre has earned recognition from local authorities for its contributions to community cohesion in Rotterdam.
