Anadolu Moskee in Rotterdam takes its name from Anatolia, the Turkish heartland whose rolling highlands, ancient civilisations, and centuries of Islamic history form the cultural homeland of the Turkish Muslim community served by this mosque. Anatolia has been a Muslim majority region since the Seljuk conquests of the eleventh century and the subsequent rise of the Ottoman Empire, and today it is the beating heart of Turkish Islamic identity with mosques, madrasas, and sufi khanqahs in every town. Naming a mosque Anadolu in the Dutch port city of Rotterdam evokes this homeland and expresses the bond that Turkish migrants and their descendants continue to feel with their Anatolian heritage. The mosque serves the Turkish Dutch community of Rotterdam with the five daily prayers, Friday Jumuah gathering, Qur'an and tajwid classes, Turkish language schooling for children, Dutch language and integration support, marriage and funeral services, zakat collection and distribution, and various welfare initiatives. Housed in an adapted urban building, the mosque features a prayer hall carpeted and oriented toward the qibla, decorated with calligraphy in the Ottoman style naming Allah, Muhammad, and the rightly guided caliphs, furnished with a mihrab and a wooden mimbar, and provided with a separate section for women. Ablution facilities are functional and well maintained. Educational programmes include classes led by qualified teachers in Qur'an recitation, Islamic beliefs, and Turkish cultural heritage, preserving language and identity for the second and third generations born in the Netherlands. Ramadan transforms the mosque into a centre of nightly worship with tarawih prayers, iftars featuring traditional Turkish dishes like mercimek çorbası and pide, Qur'an khatm sessions, and itikaf during the final ten nights. The mevlid of the Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa alihi wa sallam is commemorated in the Turkish manner with Suleyman Celebi Mevlid recitation, carrying forward the devotional heritage of Anatolia into the Dutch setting. Anadolu Moskee celebrates the diversity of Anatolian regional cultures by hosting occasional evenings dedicated to the cuisines, music, and traditions of specific regions like the Black Sea coast, the Aegean, central Anatolia, and the southeast, with congregation members of those origins preparing traditional dishes and sharing stories of their ancestral villages, weaving together the many threads of Turkish identity within the shared Islamic framework that unites them all.
