Rising above the green banks of the Senegal River at the town of Golere in Saint Louis region, the Grande Mosquee de Babaabe, known in Arabic as al Masjid al Kabir Babaabe, anchors a Fulani community whose Islamic heritage reaches back many centuries. The valley of the Senegal River has long been a corridor along which Islam spread into West Africa, and the Fulani people, also called Fulbe or Peul, played a central role in that spread through their scholars, their long distance cattle trading, and the influential Islamic states they established in the Futa Tooro and Futa Djalon. Babaabe itself is a small town in the Brakna region along the Mauritanian side of the river, and this neighbourhood mosque stands on the Senegalese side at Golere to serve the cross river community.
The surrounding Saint Louis region carries particular significance in West African history as the site of one of the earliest European trading posts, on the island of Saint Louis du Senegal, founded in 1659. Yet the Islamic identity of the river valley long predates those trading posts, with Muslim scholarship, Qur'anic memorisation schools, and devotional lodges flourishing across the region from at least the eleventh century onwards.
The mosque itself is built in the Senegalese vernacular, with smooth walls painted pale yellow, a square based minaret that recalls the great mosques of Touba and Tivaouane, and a wide courtyard shaded by mango and flame trees. Inside, the prayer hall is floored with straw mats and thin carpets, with a plain mihrab facing the qiblah and a wooden minbar carved by a local craftsman. Friday attendance fills the hall and spills into the courtyard, where additional mats are laid out on the packed earth.
Khutbahs are delivered in Pulaar with Arabic verses quoted from the Qur'an, often dwelling on the character of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, and on the sincerity of his companions, may God be pleased with them. Travellers along the river road between Saint Louis city and Matam will find accurate daily prayer times for this congregation on the page before you, alongside address and a location note, together with the quiet hospitality typical of river valley Fulani communities at every hour.
