Tentang

Beside the banks of the Senegal River in the northern village of Golere, the Mosquée de Cintchane, known also by its Arabic name Masjid Sint Shan, serves a Fulani and Tukulor farming community whose ancestors embraced Islam many centuries ago under the teaching of scholars from the Futa Toro region. The Saint Louis region of Senegal takes its name from the colonial era city founded at the mouth of the river in 1659, but the Islamic life of the area predates that founding by generations. The celebrated Umar Tall, born in Halwar near Podor around 1797, travelled from these very lands on his famous hajj and returned to lead a vast movement of faith and scholarship across West Africa.

Cintchane itself is a small village of the Fouta valley, where millet, rice, and groundnuts are cultivated along the seasonal floodwaters of the great river. Fulani herders drive their long horned zebu cattle between pastures, and fishing canoes slide quietly between the reed banks at dusk. The masjid offers the farmers and herders a gathering place for the five daily prayers, for the weekly Friday khutbah delivered in a mixture of Arabic and Pulaar, and for the remembrance gatherings on Thursday evenings when verses of the Qur'an are recited in the flowing West African style.

Architecturally, the building mirrors the Sahelian tradition that shaped the mosques of Djenne, Timbuktu, and Touba. Thick walls of mud brick faced with white lime, wooden buttresses projecting from the façade, a rectangular courtyard shaded by tamarind and baobab trees, and a modest minaret from which the muezzin calls the adhan in a warm Wolof inflected Arabic together shape a sanctuary suited to the climate and the heritage of the region.

The present page provides reliable prayer times for Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha at Mosquée de Cintchane, along with its Golere address, a map pin, and travel notes for visitors arriving from Saint Louis by the RN2 road along the river, or from Podor further east where the birthplace of Umar Tall still welcomes pilgrims. Qur'an memorisation classes run beneath the tamarind shade for village children writing verses on wooden alluwa tablets, a tradition that has continued unbroken in the Fouta for two centuries. Any traveller journeying along the Senegal River is warmly invited to pause here, pray with the gentle farmers, and share a calabash of sweet millet drink with villagers who greet every stranger as a precious guest from God.
