Sokullu Mehmet Paşa Camii bears the full name of Sokollu Mehmed Paşa (c. 1506–1579), one of the most capable Grand Viziers in all Ottoman history, who served Sultans Süleyman the Magnificent, Selim II, and Murad III. A Bosnian-born devshirme who rose through the ranks to the highest office in the empire, Sokollu is remembered for his diplomatic skill, his patronage of the great architect Mimar Sinan, and his founding of a series of mosques that remain among the jewels of Ottoman architecture — most notably the exquisite Sokollu Mehmed Paşa Camii in Istanbul's Kadırga district. To name a mosque after this great statesman is therefore to invoke a figure of the first rank in Ottoman Islamic history. The Ankara mosque bearing his name is a dignified neighbourhood structure with a single minaret, a central dome, and a stone-paved forecourt. Inside, the prayer hall is carpeted in warm tones, and the mihrab is carefully finished with Kütahya tile. The minbar is of carved wood, and the walls carry calligraphic panels in thuluth script. The imam's Friday sermons often engage thoughtfully with the legacy of Ottoman Islamic statecraft — the ideals of justice, mercy, service, and the integration of political and spiritual responsibility — drawing on the life of Sokollu and other great statesmen. Women pray in an upper gallery, and Qur'an classes for children run throughout the year. Ablution facilities are clean and heated. During Ramadan the mosque runs a full programme of tarawih. A small architectural photograph collection in the mosque's entrance hall displays fine prints of the great Sokollu Mehmed Paşa Mosque of Kadırga, the Büyük Çekmece bridge, and other works of Mimar Sinan commissioned under Sokollu's patronage — a quiet, carefully curated visual reminder of the great architectural legacy to which the name above the entrance refers. For Muslim visitors to central Ankara, Sokullu Mehmet Paşa Camii is a welcoming place to pray, and the shadow of the great vizier, whose own mosques still stand in Istanbul and elsewhere, falls gently on the modern congregation gathered beneath his name.
