About
Dilek Camii — the 'Mosque of Wishes' or 'of Desire' — bears one of the more evocative names in the Ankara mosque landscape, drawing on the old Turkish and wider Islamic sense of dua as the heart's turning toward God in supplication. Although the theology behind the name is entirely orthodox, the poetic resonance has given the mosque a particular place in the devotional imagination of its neighbourhood in central Ankara, where worshippers often come not only for the obligatory prayers but to spend a few unhurried minutes raising their hands in quiet personal supplication after a difficult day. The building is a modest neighbourhood mosque with a single minaret, a central dome, and a warmly lit interior. The mihrab is framed by restrained Kütahya tilework, and the walls bear calligraphic panels of the divine names and of short supplications drawn from the Qur'an and the Prophetic tradition. The imam's recitation is measured and his Friday sermons often return to the themes of hope, trust in the divine decree, and the inner courtesy of the believer before his Lord. Women pray in a curtained upper area, and children attend Qur'an classes during school holidays. Ablution facilities are clean and adequate, and the forecourt is planted with modest shrubs. The congregation includes elderly residents of the surrounding streets as well as office workers passing through during the day, and on Fridays the hall fills beyond its nominal capacity. During Ramadan the mosque is particularly busy for tarawih. The forecourt on Thursday evenings is often lit with the soft flicker of candles brought by women of the congregation in memory of departed loved ones, and the quiet gathering of those who come to raise a dua for the souls of the Muslim departed is one of the more moving of the week's devotional rhythms at this mosque. For visitors to central Ankara, Dilek Camii offers not only a reliable stop for the daily prayers but a gently contemplative atmosphere in which to pause, remember God, and ask for whatever the heart most needs — which is, in the end, what every mosque is for.
