Tentang

ODTÜ Mescit is the principal prayer hall of Middle East Technical University (Orta Doğu Teknik Üniversitesi, known universally in Turkey as ODTÜ), one of the country's most respected universities, located on a vast forested campus on the western edge of Ankara. ODTÜ is celebrated for its engineering and sciences programmes and for its international character, and its large Muslim student body has long made use of a dedicated campus prayer hall where the five daily prayers and the Friday congregation are held. The mescid is a purpose-built space — not a freestanding mosque with a minaret in the classical Turkish style, but a dignified prayer hall integrated into the campus architecture, with a clean interior, a careful mihrab, and comfortable carpet. Men and women have separate, curtained prayer areas, and there are ablution facilities close at hand. The atmosphere is serious and unpretentious, reflecting the student and staff congregation: young engineers, scientists, and academics of every nationality who pause in the middle of their working day to fulfil the prayer. Friday attendance in particular is very high, with the khutba delivered in clear, accessible Turkish and, on some occasions, summarised briefly in English for the benefit of visiting students. The mescid also serves as a focal point for student Islamic societies, which organise study circles, lectures, and occasional iftar gatherings during Ramadan. Qur'an and Arabic classes are available on campus. The mescid also hosts an annual iftar during Ramadan at which students of every nationality break their fasts together, the trays of dates and soup being passed along the rows in a scene of quiet international Muslim fellowship that is itself one of the most hopeful sights in the modern Turkish academic world. For Muslim visitors to ODTÜ — whether guests, alumni, or travellers attending a conference — the mescid offers a welcoming place to pray, and its presence is a small but significant reminder that serious engagement with the natural sciences has long coexisted harmoniously with serious engagement with the life of faith in the Turkish Muslim academic tradition.
