Hz. Ebubekir Camii takes its name from Hazrat Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq, the closest companion of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم, his father-in-law through ʿĀʾisha (may God be pleased with her), and the first Caliph of Islam after the Prophet's death in 632 CE. Abū Bakr is remembered as the Ṣiddīq, the 'truthful' one, for his unhesitating acceptance of the Prophet's message at every turn — including the night of the Isrāʾ and Miʿrāj — and as a ruler whose brief but pivotal caliphate held the nascent Muslim community together through the wars of apostasy. To name a mosque after him is therefore to invoke the ideals of unshakable faith, truthful speech, and principled leadership that his life represents. The Ankara mosque bearing this name is a dignified neighbourhood structure with a single minaret, a central dome, and a well-kept forecourt. Inside, the prayer hall is carpeted in warm tones, and the mihrab is carefully finished with Kütahya tile. Calligraphic panels along the walls often include the name of Abū Bakr among those of the other rightly-guided caliphs. The imam's Friday sermons often engage with the life and virtues of the first Caliph, drawing practical lessons for the contemporary Muslim from his generosity, his humility, and his steadfast truthfulness. Women pray in an upper gallery, and Qur'an classes for children run throughout the year. Ablution facilities are clean and heated. During Ramadan the mosque runs a full programme of tarawih and community iftars. For Muslim visitors to central Ankara, Hz. The mosque's weekly adult study circle has been working its way, over a period of several years, through a careful reading of the classical biography of Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq, and the patient, chapter-by-chapter progress of this study is itself a small embodiment of the very virtues — steadiness, modesty, and truthful attention to sources — that the first Caliph's life so powerfully exemplifies. Ebubekir Camii is a welcoming place to pray, and the name above its entrance is a reminder that the whole subsequent history of the Muslim community rests in part on the quiet, unwavering trust of one man — the Ṣiddīq.
