Tentang

Etlik Merkez Camii serves as the central mosque of the Etlik neighbourhood in Ankara, a district on the northern slopes of the capital that has grown from a village on the outskirts of the old city to a densely populated residential zone over the past century. The name Etlik is derived from the Turkish word et, meaning meat, and once referred to the butchers' and tanners' workshops that were historically established outside the city walls — a reminder that many of Ankara's present-day neighbourhoods bear in their names the memory of earlier economic activities. The Merkez Camii is the principal cami of the district, a substantial and dignified structure with twin slim minarets flanking a central dome and a broad stone-paved courtyard. Inside, the prayer hall is finished with care, with a carpet in warm tones, a carefully worked mihrab, a wooden minbar in traditional style, and calligraphic panels along the walls. The women's gallery is generous in size. The mosque is served by a team of imams and muezzins, and Friday attendance is very high, with the khutba broadcast onto the courtyard through external loudspeakers. Qur'an and ethics classes for children run throughout the year, and adult study circles tackle a wide range of subjects. During Ramadan the mosque runs an extensive programme of tarawih, daily Qur'an khatms, and community iftars, and becomes one of the spiritual hubs of Etlik. On particular Islamic anniversaries, the mosque's imam leads small walking visits to the historic Etlik cemetery nearby, where members of the congregation recite al-Fātiḥa for their departed relatives and for the wider Muslim community, a gentle continuation of the classical Turkish practice by which the relationship with the dead is kept alive through the recitation of the Qur'an over their resting places. For Muslim visitors to the northern districts of Ankara, Etlik Merkez Camii offers a dignified place of prayer and a genuine experience of Turkish neighbourhood Islam at scale, and the surrounding streets contain ample options for tea, modest family restaurants, and a leisurely evening walk after the maghrib prayer has been performed.
