Basınevleri Merkez Camii serves as the central mosque of Basınevleri — 'the Press Houses' — a residential district in Ankara originally developed as a housing cooperative for journalists and press workers, reflecting the mid-twentieth-century Turkish practice of organising new neighbourhoods around specific professions or state agencies. The district's name preserves the memory of this origin even as its population has since diversified, and the Merkez Camii that bears the district's name has long served the daily religious needs of its residents. It is a substantial and dignified structure with twin slim minarets flanking a central dome and a broad stone-paved courtyard. Inside, the prayer hall is finished to a high standard, with a carpet in warm tones, a carefully worked mihrab of stone and Kütahya tile, a wooden minbar carved in traditional style, and calligraphic panels in several classical scripts along the walls. Women pray in a generous upper gallery. The mosque is served by a team of imams and muezzins, and Friday attendance is high, with the khutba broadcast onto the courtyard through external loudspeakers for worshippers unable to find space inside. Given the district's journalistic heritage, the imam's Friday sermons sometimes engage thoughtfully with the Islamic ethics of speech and communication — truthfulness, the weighing of words, the responsibilities of those whose profession is the shaping of public discourse — themes of particular resonance for a congregation that continues to include members of the Turkish press. Qur'an and ethics classes for children run throughout the year, and adult study circles cover a wide range of subjects. During Ramadan the mosque runs an extensive programme of tarawih, daily Qur'an khatms, and community iftars. The mosque's Friday sermons are occasionally drawn upon by journalists of the congregation as sources of reflection for their weekly opinion columns, and the traffic in ideas between pulpit and press that this represents is itself a small and characteristic sign of the long Turkish Muslim tradition of fruitful dialogue between religious scholarship and the public conversation of the nation. For Muslim visitors to the Basınevleri district, the Merkez Camii offers a dignified place of prayer and a genuine experience of Turkish neighbourhood Islam.
