About

Başaran Camii takes its name from the Turkish verb başarmak, 'to succeed', with the participle başaran meaning 'the successful one' or 'the one who achieves'. The name is commonly a Turkish family surname, and the mosque in central Ankara that bears it was most probably founded by a family of that name whose members are memorialised in its dedication. The name carries a subtle but encouraging theological resonance for the worshippers who pass beneath it: the Qur'an itself describes the true successful ones as those who establish the prayer, give the zakat, and turn their hearts away from idle talk, and the reminder that genuine success is measured by the standards of the hereafter rather than by the shifting criteria of this world is a gentle one to place above the threshold of a mosque. The building itself is a neighbourhood structure of modest scale with a single minaret, a central dome, and a well-kept forecourt. Inside, the prayer hall is carpeted in warm tones, and the mihrab is carefully finished with Kütahya tile. The walls carry calligraphic panels of divine names and verses from the Qur'an, with a noticeable preference for passages describing the qualities of the muflihūn, the truly successful. The imam's Friday sermons often return to these themes, drawing on classical commentaries to explore the Qur'anic conception of success. Women pray in a comfortable upper gallery, and Qur'an classes for children run throughout the year. Ablution facilities are clean and heated. During Ramadan the mosque runs a full programme of tarawih and community iftars organised by local families. The mosque's annual Qur'an competition for children of the neighbourhood, held at the end of the summer, ends with a quiet ceremony in which the winning reciters receive small prizes and, more importantly, the personal congratulations of the imam, who reminds them that true success in any matter of the religion is measured not by worldly reward but by the sincerity of intention with which it was pursued. For Muslim visitors to central Ankara, Başaran Camii is a welcoming place to pray, and the name above the door is itself a gentle reminder of the true measure of a successful life.
