Tentang

Within the al Qanayat district of Egypt's Eastern Province, the mosque known locally as Masjid al Shawadfiya carries an inscription on its signboard noting that prayer within its walls is not permitted because of the presence of a grave inside the structure. The guidance of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) on the matter of building mosques over graves has been recorded in many well known narrations, and the community has respected this local ruling by preserving the historic building as a monument while directing regular prayers to other neighbouring masjids. The Eastern Province is one of the traditional agricultural heartlands of Egypt. The wider Eastern Province, known in Arabic as al Sharqiyyah, covers a fertile stretch of the Nile delta that has fed Egypt for more than five thousand years. Its villages date back to the Pharaonic period, and the province includes important Islamic monuments such as the city of al Zaqaziq and the site of Tell Basta near the ancient city of Bubastis. Muslim life took firm root across the delta after the conquest of Egypt led by Amr ibn al As (may God be pleased with him) during the caliphate of Umar (may God be pleased with him), and villages have maintained their mosques continuously since then. The architecture of Masjid al Shawadfiya reflects the local Egyptian village style. A mudbrick and limestone exterior coated in lime wash, a small dome rising above the grave chamber, a short minaret, arched windows with wooden shutters, and a shaded courtyard with a mulberry or sycamore tree give the building its quiet presence. Because the structure houses a grave, the authorities have retained it as a heritage site while welcoming visitors who wish to reflect on the historical layers of delta Islam. Daily prayer times for the surrounding al Qanayat neighbourhood, together with the address of Masjid al Shawadfiya, a map, and practical notes explaining the community guidance on prayer within the building, are presented on this page for village residents, Egyptian travellers, and visitors interested in delta heritage. Al Qanayat is known for its rich cotton and wheat harvests, its traditional sugar cane pressing workshops, and its proximity to the major archaeological sites of the Eastern Province. After Maghrib, visitors are gently encouraged to perform their prayers in the nearby working mosques, carrying home from al Shawadfiya a thoughtful reminder that Muslim villages treasure their history while strictly following authentic Prophetic guidance in every matter of worship.
