Egypt's Eastern Province, known in Arabic as al Sharqiyya and centred on the historic city of Zagazig, spreads across the eastern Nile delta where cotton, rice and berseem clover have sustained generations of farming families. Within the town of al Qanayat, this Masjid al Anwar al Muhammadiyya carries a name that translates as the Muhammadan Lights, a reference to the noble attributes of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, and the spiritual illumination associated with his remembrance. The delta's Islamic heritage is deep, reaching back to the arrival of Amr ibn al As, may God be pleased with him, and the establishment of Fustat, and it continues through the scholars of al Azhar in Cairo and the countryside teachers whose mosques anchor every village. Zagazig itself is associated with the nineteenth century Urabi movement and with the nearby ancient site of Bubastis whose cat goddess temple once drew pilgrims from across Egypt. Architecturally the al Anwar mosque follows a practical delta style, with whitewashed walls rising from a limestone base, a single minaret finished in cream and green tile and a low central dome raised over the prayer hall. A forecourt paved in pale stone welcomes worshippers, the mihrab is lined in cream marble and the mimbar is carved from local timber in three ascending steps. Daily prayers follow the calendar issued by the Ministry of Awqaf, Jumu'ah khutbah is delivered in classical Arabic and Ramadan evenings bring shared iftar tables laid across the forecourt with molokhia, rice with chicken, Egyptian aish baladi bread and the sweet konafa dessert for which the delta is famed. Eid mornings draw families in freshly pressed gallabiyas, and the takbirat ring across the cotton fields from the evening before. Visitors are welcomed with warm anise tea, shoes are left on simple shelves and modest dress is expected. Nearby lie the ruins of ancient Bubastis, the Zagazig Museum, the canal paths that wind between delta villages and the historic houses of Belbeis, each offering a window onto the province's layered cultivated past. The village committee organises a weekly cleaning rota in which every family takes a turn to sweep the forecourt, polish the brass lanterns and refresh the water in the wudu basins, and the children who participate are gently taught that such maintenance is itself an act of worship recorded in the book of deeds.
