Tentang

Serving the Muslim families of Winnipeg, the Abu Bakr Al Siddiq Community Centre and Masjid carries the honoured name of the first caliph and closest companion of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, Abu Bakr, may God be pleased with him, whose steadfast truthfulness earned him the title al Siddiq. The Canadian prairies may seem distant from the lands where Islam first took root, yet Winnipeg has been home to Muslim families since the early twentieth century, with immigrants arriving from Lebanon, Syria, Bosnia, Pakistan, Somalia, and across the Arab world. The centre reflects this layered heritage, operating as a prayer space, weekend school, youth activity hub, and venue for marriages, funerals, and community iftars. Architecturally the structure takes a practical Canadian form, insulated brick walls engineered for the bitterly cold Manitoba winters, broad windows that flood the prayer hall with natural light during the long summer days, and a discreet dome and minaret motif that marks its identity from the street. Inside, the carpeted main hall accommodates several hundred worshippers, with a separate women's section offering equivalent sightlines to the mimbar. The five daily prayers are observed, Friday khutbahs alternate between English and Arabic, and In Ramadan the centre operates each night as a gathering place for tarawih prayers followed by shared suhoor for those able to remain. Eid celebrations include two prayer sessions to accommodate the growing congregation, followed by bouncy castles, henna stations, and potluck meals that bring together Winnipeg's diverse Muslim heritage on one carpet. The centre also runs Arabic classes, Qur'an memorisation circles, marriage counselling, and youth halaqas. Visitors passing through the prairie capital can find the masjid on Winnipeg's residential outskirts, within easy reach of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, The Forks historic site, and the neighbourhoods that stretch toward Assiniboine Park. Modest dress and respectful quietude are appreciated, and newcomers are warmly welcomed into the community's ongoing programmes. The masjid stands as a quiet Canadian testament to the patience, generosity, and faith of immigrants who built dignified Islamic institutions far from their ancestral homelands while still raising children who inherit the full luminous heritage of global Muslim civilisation in a welcoming northern land.
