Tentang

Taman Pendidikan Al Quran Ath Tholibin in the Waleran area of East Java combines a neighbourhood Quran school and prayer space in a single building, a common configuration across Indonesia where the acronym TPQ, meaning Quran education garden, names thousands of community based learning centres. Ath Tholibin, Arabic for the students, expresses the school's identity as a place dedicated to the younger children of the neighbourhood who gather every afternoon after their formal schooling to learn the Arabic letters, tajwid, and the short surahs of the Quran. East Java is the province with the highest density of traditional Islamic boarding schools in Indonesia, and the TPQ networks extend this culture into urban and suburban life by offering early Quran literacy to children whose families cannot send them to pesantren. The building itself is a modest two storey structure, with the prayer space on the ground floor and classrooms upstairs. The prayer hall is floored in tile with prayer mats laid out at maghrib, and the qibla wall is finished in a simple wooden mihrab. Ceiling fans turn through the humid tropical afternoon, bringing a welcome breeze during the long lessons. A wide veranda shades the entrance where parents wait for their children at pickup. Daily prayers are observed by teachers, parents, and older pupils. Jumu'ah draws the surrounding fathers in sarung and white peci. Ramadan transforms the calendar of the TPQ: tarawih prayers each night, evening iftars of bubur sumsum and kurma, and special intensive Quran camps during the school holidays, all held in the spirit of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, who emphasised teaching the Quran to the young. Eid prayer is held in the courtyard and adjacent lane, with families sharing ketupat and opor ayam afterward. The school functions throughout the year as a quiet anchor for the neighbourhood. Close by stand the traditional Javanese rice terraces of the Waleran plateau, the coffee estates of Lamongan, the ancient tombs along the Babat pilgrimage route, the salt fields of Tuban's coastal strip, and the market town of Babat with its famous soto and wingko biscuits.
