Tentang

Yeni Cami, whose name translates from Turkish as the new mosque, serves as an important spiritual home for the Turkish Muslim community of Vienna's second district, the Leopoldstadt, a historic quarter bordered by the Danube Canal and the sprawling Prater park that has long welcomed waves of newcomers to the Austrian capital from the wider Ottoman and later Turkish world. The masjid was established in the late nineteenth century when Ottoman diplomatic and commercial links between Istanbul and Vienna generated a small but significant Turkish presence in the city, and its congregation has been continuously renewed by the Gastarbeiter migrations of the nineteen sixties and seventies and by more recent Turkish settlement in Vienna's service and hospitality sectors. Vienna itself has hosted Muslim visitors and residents for centuries, from the Ottoman envoys of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries through Habsburg era Bosnian soldiers and civil servants to the Turkish and Arab communities who have shaped districts such as Favoriten, Ottakring, and Leopoldstadt in our present era. The masjid occupies a dignified converted building adapted to accommodate a rectangular prayer hall with rows of sujud marked on patterned carpet, a tall wooden minbar carved with classical Ottoman motifs, a painted mihrab bearing verses from Surah Al Fatiha, and a separate women's gallery reached by an internal staircase. Calligraphic roundels bearing the names of God, the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, and the rightly guided caliphs, may God be pleased with them, adorn the interior walls in the Ottoman tradition. Five daily prayers follow the Diyanet timetable published for Austria, Jumu'ah is held in early afternoon with a khutbah delivered in Turkish and often summarised in German, and the blessed month of Ramadan fills the hall with teravih prayers and mukabele readings of the Quran. Children attend weekend classes in Quran recitation and Turkish language instruction. The masjid also hosts Nikah ceremonies, funeral prayers, and community iftars. Nearby landmarks include the Danube Canal embankments, the Prater park with its great ferris wheel, and the Augarten baroque gardens. Visitors are warmly welcomed at any prayer time.
