Tentang

Noor Islamic Centre Vienna occupies a welcoming corner of the Austrian capital's second district, within easy reach of the Praterstern transit hub and the sprawling green expanses of the Prater park, and serves a congregation drawn from Vienna's wonderfully diverse Muslim population including Bosnian, Turkish, Arab, Iranian, Afghan, Pakistani, and Somali families alongside European converts who have come to find spiritual home among this hospitable community. The Arabic word Noor means light, one of the beautiful names of God, and the founders chose it to affirm that the masjid serves as a place of divine guidance in a modern European capital known for its musical heritage, imperial palaces, and coffee house culture. Vienna itself has hosted Muslim residents for many centuries, from the Ottoman diplomatic missions that arrived following the seventeenth century sieges, through the Bosnian soldiers and civil servants of the Habsburg period, the Turkish guest workers who rebuilt postwar Austria from the sixties onward, and the more recent arrivals from Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Somalia who have added further richness to the community. The masjid occupies a spacious converted premises adapted to accommodate a main prayer hall for men on the ground level, an elegant women's gallery reached by a broad staircase, a library of Arabic, Turkish, Bosnian, and German religious works, classrooms for weekend instruction, and an event hall used for iftar gatherings during the blessed month of Ramadan. Five daily prayers follow the Vienna timetable, Jumu'ah gathers hundreds of worshippers each week with a khutbah delivered in Arabic and German, and Ramadan fills the halls with nightly taraweeh prayers led by a visiting hafiz and iftar meals prepared by community volunteers. Children attend weekend classes in Quran recitation, Arabic, and Islamic manners, while adults gather for circles on the Quran and the life of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family. Nikah ceremonies, funeral prayers, bereavement counselling, and charitable collections for refugees form part of the masjid's weekly rhythm. Visitors arriving from Praterstern or the nearby Ferris wheel of the Prater will find a warm welcome from the volunteer trustees.
