Surau Baitul Makmur Kg. Durian Tunjung

Named Baitul Makmur, meaning the Prospered House, this surau serves the Malay community of Kampung Durian Tunjung on the federal territory of Labuan, the island off the Sabah coast of East Malaysia. Labuan, which in classical Malay meant anchorage, has a complex history of Bruneian, British colonial and Japanese occupation, emerging after independence as a quiet tax haven and offshore finance hub while its village communities continue to live much as they have for generations, fishing the reefs and tending small orchards of durian and rambutan. The surau, a smaller category of mosque intended primarily for daily prayers rather than the full Friday congregation, occupies a modest plot beside the village football field, its walls painted a fresh mint green with white trim and its zinc roof curving up into a small onion dome at the centre. Labuan's Islamic culture draws from both the Bruneian court tradition and the wider Malay archipelago, and the surau's interior is decorated with wood carvings that echo the awan larat cloud pattern used in Bruneian palaces and mosques. The carpet is rolled out each day by the younger villagers on rotation, and the mihrab is lit by a simple pendant lamp bought from the Chinese market on Jalan Merdeka. A set of stairs at the side leads to a women's gallery with a view of the compound's coconut palms. Jumu'ah is technically held at the larger district mosque, but the surau fills each day for the five obligatory prayers, and during Ramadan it offers tarawih prayers led by retired teachers who memorise the Qur'an. Durian Tunjung is known for the dense cluster of durian trees at the village entrance, and in harvest season the surau grounds are perfumed by the fruit as families share the spiky delicacies after maghrib. Visitors arriving by ferry from Kota Kinabalu or Brunei can reach the village by taxi, and are welcomed provided they dress modestly, remove footwear at the wooden steps and greet the congregation with the gentle assalamu alaikum that the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, made a greeting of peace.
