Known simply in Arabic as Masjid Mahattat Waqud, the Fuel Station Mosque at Umm Said in the Al Wakrah region of Qatar is a practical and humble construction attached to a petrol station serving the industrial town at the heart of the country's hydrocarbon sector. Umm Said, also rendered Mesaieed, lies along the Gulf coast south of Doha and hosts the largest industrial complex in Qatar, including refineries, petrochemical plants and the country's main sea port for bulk exports. The mosque meets the daily needs of truck drivers, engineers, shift workers and travellers moving between Doha and the Saudi border via the coastal highway. The building is compact and contemporary, built of prefabricated concrete blocks finished in pale cream render, topped by a modest green tile roof and a short minaret with a single balcony for the adhan loudspeaker. The attached wudu facility is generously sized, designed to accommodate the rush of drivers making quick stops, and features hot and cold water with clean tile throughout. Inside, the prayer hall is simple and functional, lit by recessed LED lights, cooled by powerful split unit air conditioners and carpeted in easy clean turquoise and gold polyester. The mihrab is a pale marble clad niche framed by calligraphic panels reading the opening of Surah al Fatiha, and a small wooden lectern holds a Qur'an for voluntary readers. A modest women's section behind a wooden partition accommodates the rare female traveller seeking prayer during a long journey. Friday prayer is combined with the main town mosque, but the five daily prayers are well attended by the constant stream of truck drivers from Qatar, Oman and Saudi Arabia whose schedules are timed around them. Ramadan turns the station into a hub of hospitality, with the operator distributing dates, juice and sometimes full iftar meals to drivers stranded on the road at sunset, honouring the teaching of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, about caring for travellers. Visitors passing through can stop briefly, dress modestly and respect the constant movement around them by keeping prayers efficient and belongings tidy within the small but essential space.
