Perched in the southern Lebanese village of Bazouriyeh above the ancient port of Tyre, this husayniyyah remembers the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, Imam al Husayn ibn Ali, may God be pleased with him, whose martyrdom at Karbala in the year 680 shaped the devotional life of countless communities across the Muslim world. Husayniyyat are community halls dedicated to the remembrance of Ashura and the wider lessons of patience, justice and resistance to tyranny embodied in the events of Karbala. South Lebanon has cherished these gatherings for centuries, and the village of Bazouriyeh overlooks the olive terraces and citrus groves that slope down toward the Mediterranean city of Tyre, itself an inheritance of Phoenician, Roman, Byzantine and Mamluk layers.

The building is a simple stone structure with a flat roof, tall shuttered windows and a generous interior hall seating several hundred worshippers on carpeted floors. Black banners hang from the ceiling during the first ten days of Muharram, and the walls carry calligraphic panels with verses from the Quran and phrases of lament for Husayn and his household. A small raised platform at the front holds a reading stand from which reciters chant the maqtal narrative, moving gathered listeners to tears as they recount the thirst of the children, the last prayer of the imam and the courage of his sister Zaynab, may God be pleased with her.

Throughout the year the hall hosts weekly lectures, Quran recitation circles and gatherings to mark the birthdays and martyrdoms of the twelve imams of the Prophetic household. Youth groups meet to plan charitable work across South Lebanon, from distributing heating fuel in winter to orphan sponsorship programmes run with the Imam Sadr foundation in nearby Tyre. Women manage a well kept kitchen that prepares communal meals of rice, lentils and stewed vegetables offered free to every attendee after the majlis.

The village itself sits amid biblical landscapes of olives, pomegranates and tumbling stone walls, and the husayniyyah is often the first building visitors are led to by proud residents. Travellers who come respectfully are invited to sit at the back of the hall, drink the strong black coffee poured from copper dallahs and listen as the ancient story of Karbala is retold once again in the patient Arabic of South Lebanon.
