Serving the Ksar Ouled Abd El Ouahid, one of the remarkable fortified granary villages of the Tataouine region in southern Tunisia, this mosque anchors the spiritual life of a community whose ancestors built distinctive mud brick structures known as ghorfas, tiered vaulted grain stores that attracted worldwide attention after scenes from the Star Wars films were shot in the surrounding landscape. The ksour of the Tataouine region represent one of North Africa's most unique architectural traditions, developed by Amazigh and Arab populations to store harvests, shelter livestock, and provide refuge during times of raiding or conflict. Tataouine itself lies in the arid southeast of Tunisia near the Libyan border, a land of stark beauty where olive groves, date palm oases, and rocky plateaus stretch toward the Sahara. The regional mosque architecture follows a Saharan idiom of whitewashed mud brick walls, flat or gently vaulted roofs, simple domes, and modest minarets whose square bases and low silhouettes harmonise with the surrounding ksour. This mosque offers a dignified face to its village setting, with thick walls moderating temperature extremes, a carpeted prayer hall, a mihrab faced in simple plaster, and a wooden minbar. Five daily prayers gather residents and occasional visiting tourists, and Jumu'ah fills the hall with men arriving from surrounding hamlets. Sermons in Arabic address Qur'anic themes, hadith guidance, and the ethical traditions of Saharan pastoral life. Ramadan brings communal iftar meals of Tunisian dishes including couscous, shorba frik, tajine, and sweet makroudh served after Maghrib, followed by taraweeh prayers extending into the cool desert night. Qur'anic memorisation classes for children meet year round. Women worship in a dedicated section with its own entry, and sisters circles meet for study and communal support. Eid prayers draw extended families from the surrounding ksour. Nearby landmarks include the spectacular Ksar Ouled Soltane with its multi storey ghorfas, the Chenini cliff village, the Douiret abandoned settlements, the landscapes made famous by the Star Wars films, and the broader Saharan horizons that define life in southern Tunisia. International film crews still occasionally return to the ksour region to shoot in these striking landscapes, and mosque volunteers often help welcome visitors and share stories of the community's remarkable architectural heritage.
