Rising from the sandstone coloured streets of Tataouine in southern Tunisia, the Mosque of the Rightly Guided Caliphs takes its name from the four successors to the leadership of the Muslim community after the passing of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, namely Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, and Ali, may God be pleased with them all. Naming a mosque after these four figures collectively is a tradition that honours the foundational decades of Islamic history when the faith spread from the Arabian peninsula across North Africa, reaching Ifriqiya, the Roman name for the region that includes modern Tunisia, through the campaigns of Uqba ibn Nafi, may God be pleased with him, in the seventh century. Tataouine, whose Berber name is said to mean springs or sources of water, sits in the arid south where the ksour, fortified granaries built by the indigenous Amazigh population, still dot the landscape and draw visitors to the nearby villages of Chenini and Douiret. The town itself became administratively prominent during the French colonial period and after independence grew into the capital of its governorate. Its mosques typically follow the simple North African idiom of whitewashed walls, flat roofs, square minarets in the Maghrebi style, and cool interior courtyards paved with local stone. The Rightly Guided Caliphs Mosque offers the five daily prayers to the residents of its neighbourhood, swelling noticeably at Jumu'ah when the khutbah draws worshippers from surrounding streets. During the blessed month of Ramadan the building remains alive deep into the night with taraweeh and tahajjud, while the two Eid mornings see large gatherings overflowing into the nearby alleys. The mosque complex generally includes a small library, spaces for Quranic instruction for children after school hours, and a washing facility in keeping with traditional ablution customs. Travellers exploring the Tataouine region find the mosque a welcoming waypoint between desert excursions and the town's lively weekly souk. Desert travellers resting briefly in Tataouine often remark that the simple whitewashed walls of this prayer house convey a serene dignity matched only by its namesake caliphs themselves.
