Tentang

Within the leafy campus of Universitas Muhammadiyah Sukabumi in the cool highlands of West Java, Masjid al Umm offers students, lecturers, and surrounding neighbours a quiet centre for the five daily prayers and weekly Jumu'ah. The university is one of the many higher education institutions founded by Muhammadiyah, a reformist educational movement established in 1912 by Kiai Haji Ahmad Dahlan in Yogyakarta. Muhammadiyah schools, hospitals, and universities span the Indonesian archipelago, combining rigorous modern education with attentive religious instruction rooted in the Qur'an and the Sunnah.

Sukabumi itself lies in the Priangan highlands south of Jakarta, famed for its tea plantations, cool climate, and Sundanese cultural heritage. The region welcomed Islam gradually through the preaching of the walisongo and their successors, and the surrounding villages have long sent their children to pesantren and madrasah institutions before continuing to Bogor, Bandung, and Jakarta for higher studies. The name al Umm, the mother, evokes the tenderness of the mothers described in the Qur'an, from Hajar who ran between Safa and Marwa seeking water for Isma'il to Maryam the daughter of Imran praised in a full surah of the revelation.

Architecturally the campus mosque reflects the friendly Muhammadiyah institutional taste. A white rendered building with a single green dome, a slim ornamental minaret, tall arched windows, and wide verandahs for shoe racks welcomes students who walk between lectures. Inside, soft carpets cover the floor, calligraphic panels cite the Prophet's saying that paradise lies at the feet of mothers, and a small library holds books in Bahasa Indonesia, Arabic, and English covering fiqh, tafsir, and the history of Muhammadiyah.

Accurate daily prayer timings for Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha at Masjid al Umm, Universitas Muhammadiyah Sukabumi, appear on this page along with the campus address, a map pin, and hospitable notes for any visitor arriving from central Sukabumi, the Pelabuhan Ratu coast, or the Bogor highway. During Ramadan the congregation hosts shared iftars of kolak pisang, es buah, nasi liwet, tempeh, and sweet bandrek ginger tea, and tarawih evenings fill the hall with student qaris trained in the university's Qur'anic memorisation program. Any traveller journeying through the Priangan highlands between the tea plantations of Puncak and the surf beaches of Pelabuhan Ratu is warmly welcomed to step within these cheerful walls, to kneel upon the green carpets among the lively young congregation, and to whisper a soft salawat upon every mother whose sleepless nightly vigils first taught a believing child to lift his small palms toward the stars of a pure West Javanese sky over a long and loving mountainous childhood.
