Dedicated to the foster mother of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, the masjid of Sayyidah Halimah al Sa'diyah, may God be pleased with her, gathers worshippers in the strategic port city of Suez at the southern mouth of the Suez Canal. Halimah belonged to the Bani Sa'd branch of the Hawazin tribe, a desert people who raised the infants of Mecca among the clean air and simple life of the open country. She received the young Muhammad into her household and cared for him during the tender early years of his childhood, an honour whose blessing extended through her family for generations.
Suez itself occupies the ancient site where traders and pilgrims have long gathered before crossing between the two great seas. The city rose to international prominence after the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869, which transformed global shipping and made the narrow strip of Egyptian coast one of the most watched maritime passages on earth. Residents of Suez include dockworkers, engineers, merchants, and generations of families who remained steadfast during the fierce fighting of 1967 and 1973 that ravaged their city and earned Suez the proud title of Port of Valour.
The masjid, like many in the governorate of As Suways, follows a simple Egyptian coastal style of whitewashed walls, green painted minaret, and a flat roofed prayer hall cooled by ceiling fans during the hot summer months. The mihrab carries calligraphy from Surat al Rahman, and the minbar is adorned with salawat upon the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family. Families gather here for Fajr before the first shipping traffic begins to move through the canal, and again for Maghrib as the sun sets over the water.
Visitors to this page will find accurate daily prayer times for Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha at the Suez mosque, along with its precise address, a location map, and useful guidance that helps residents of the As Suways governorate, merchant sailors docked in the harbour, and pilgrims travelling between Africa and the Arabian peninsula to join the warm congregational worship offered here with ease every day.
