Tentang

Within the dense apartment blocks of Pangsapuri Sri Tanjung in Subang Jaya, Selangor, the Surau Nurul Ehsan offers Malaysian residents a small but welcoming space for the five daily prayers, Qur'anic recitation classes and Ramadan programmes. A surau in the Malay tradition is a small prayer hall smaller than a masjid proper, typically without the capacity to host the Jumu'ah sermon, though many suraus organise study circles, women's gatherings and children's religious education. The name Nurul Ehsan, meaning the light of spiritual excellence, draws on the Qur'anic concept of ihsan, the worship of God as if you see Him, knowing that if you do not see Him He sees you, a teaching rooted in the famous hadith of Jibril narrated in Muslim's collection. Malaysia's Islamic heritage was shaped by the Malacca sultanate, the traders of Acheh and Patani and the scholars of Minangkabau whose teachings flowed into the peninsula across centuries. Subang Jaya itself is a planned township developed from the late nineteen seventies, and its apartment communities reflect the diverse Malay, Chinese and Indian Muslim families living side by side with neighbours of other faiths. Architecturally the surau is compact, occupying part of a ground floor within the apartment complex, with a carpeted prayer hall in pale green, a modest mihrab tiled in cobalt, a low mimbar and a small women's section separated by a timber screen. Ceiling fans cool the space, and a slim speaker system carries the adhan to the surrounding flats. Prayers are led by volunteer imams from among the residents, Ramadan evenings bring communal iftar with bubur lambuk, fried noodles, ayam masak lemak and dates and tarawih continues past nine in the evening. Eid mornings move to a larger nearby masjid, while the surau remains open for quiet reflection and Qur'anic recitation. Visitors should dress modestly, leave shoes on low racks and accept the polite offer of teh tarik tea from the committee. Nearby landmarks include the Sunway Pyramid shopping centre, the Sunway Lagoon theme park, the USJ jogging parks and the old Subang airport. A small lending library of children's books in Bahasa Malaysia, English and Arabic occupies one corner of the surau, and the residents' committee organises monthly story time sessions for young children on Saturday mornings, gently nurturing early literacy and a love for Qur'anic stories within the apartment community's youngest generation.
