Tentang

Set within the elegant Medborgarplatsen district on the island of Sodermalm, the Stockholm Mosque occupies one of the most unusual buildings in the Swedish capital. The structure itself was not originally designed as a mosque. Completed in 1903 as an electrical substation for the city tramway in a richly ornamented Moorish Revival idiom, it remained a curiosity on the streetscape for nearly a century, its arabesques, horseshoe arches, and patterned brickwork hinting at a purpose it did not yet serve. When the growing Muslim community of Stockholm purchased and restored the building, opening it as a mosque in the year 2000, the architecture found its true calling after almost a hundred years of waiting.

Inside, the original cast iron columns were retained and painted in soft greens and creams, while a new mihrab was carved into the eastern wall and a fine Persian carpet laid across the floor. Calligraphic panels bearing verses of the Quran and the blessed names were added with restraint, respecting the listed status of the historic shell. The result is a prayer space that feels at once Ottoman, Andalusian, and Scandinavian, a dialogue between two architectural traditions that rarely meet so closely, and visitors often remark that the building seems to breathe more easily now that its ornament finally corresponds to its purpose.

The congregation is remarkably international, gathering Arabic, Bosnian, Turkish, Somali, Afghan, and Swedish voices on any given Friday. Sermons are delivered in Swedish and Arabic, invoking the blessed life of our master, the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, alongside the quiet steadfastness of those who walked beside him, may God be pleased with them, whose lives continue to guide worshippers navigating long winter nights and short summer ones alike. The mosque runs Quran classes, Swedish language support for newcomers, and regular guided tours for schools and tourists curious about the building's double life.

The building appears in several Stockholm walking tour guides as one of the finest examples of turn of the century Moorish Revival in northern Europe, and its second life as a working sanctuary has only deepened that reputation. Travellers walking from Gamla Stan across the water often pause at the small square outside, watching elderly gentlemen chat in the shade of the arcaded entrance while children trail behind them. Few mosques in Europe carry so gracefully the story of a city learning to welcome new neighbours inside the walls of its own inherited past.
