Tentang

Among the active Muslim congregations of southern England, Shahjalal Mosque and Islamic Centre Southampton holds a beloved place in the spiritual life of a port city whose maritime history stretches back to the Roman era and beyond. Southampton grew wealthy during the Middle Ages as a harbour for wool, wine, and later the great Atlantic liners, and since the middle of the twentieth century it has become home to vibrant Muslim communities originally from Bangladesh, Pakistan, India, Somalia, the Arab world, and many other lands. This mosque belongs to that living story of British Muslim settlement and community building, welcoming worshippers of every background into its unhurried congregational life.

The name honours Hazrat Shah Jalal, the revered thirteenth century saint and traveller who brought Islam to the Sylhet region of what is now northeastern Bangladesh. His journey from Yemen, across Persia and India, and his patient teaching among the rural communities of Sylhet, inspired countless converts and shaped the spiritual landscape of Bengal for centuries after. Naming a Southampton mosque after him links the local congregation to that long chain of teachers who themselves learned from the Companions of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, may God be pleased with them all, in service to ordinary believers.

The centre occupies a converted building adapted thoughtfully for Islamic use. A carpeted main prayer hall faces a simple mihrab, a women's prayer area on the upper floor is reached by a separate entrance, and classrooms host madrasah lessons for children on weekday evenings and weekend mornings. Ablution facilities, a library of Islamic books in Bengali, Urdu, Arabic, and English, and a small community kitchen support the wider life of the neighbourhood.

Worshippers gather here for the five daily prayers, for Jumu'ah delivered in a blend of English and Bengali, and for taraweeh during Ramadan, when the mosque hosts community iftars cooked by volunteer families. Non Muslim neighbours, university students, and civic visitors are welcomed for open days and interfaith events throughout the year. On this page you will find the current prayer times, the precise address in Southampton, and practical notes that help every visitor, pilgrim, traveller, and local family locate the mosque and take part in its warm congregational life without the least awkwardness or hesitation.
