The Holy Shrine of the Imamzadegan Sayyid Reza and Sayyid Ali Akbar, upon them be peace, stands in the town of Sorkheh in Semnan province, a quiet centre on Iran's central plateau along the ancient Silk Road route between Tehran and Khorasan. The title imamzadeh refers to a descendant of the noble Imams, upon them be peace, whose burial has been preserved and venerated by local communities, and Iran is dotted with hundreds of such shrines that anchor neighbourhood devotional life across its provinces. The Sorkheh shrine commemorates two such descendants, Sayyid Reza and Sayyid Ali Akbar, whose lineages are traced through the family of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family. Sorkheh itself is a small town known for its old quarters of wind catcher houses, its carpet weaving tradition, and its role as a stop on the great desert caravan route from Rey to Khorasan. The shrine complex comprises a mirrored burial chamber beneath a turquoise tiled dome, an adjoining courtyard with a reflecting pool, a prayer hall for daily salah, and a small hosseiniyeh for Muharram commemorations held each year. The interior of the shrine is characteristic of classical Iranian shrine architecture: mirror worked walls catching the soft lamplight, carved wooden doors inlaid with brass, verses of the Quran and the names of the noble Imams in gold against deep blue tilework, and a zarih of silver and brass enclosing the tombs. Pilgrims enter quietly, recite Fatiha, and offer ziyarah to the noble descendants while sending blessings on the Prophet and his family. Daily prayers are held in the attached hall, and during the nights of Qadr, the Muharram processions, and the anniversaries of the birth and martyrdom of the Imams, the shrine fills with families reciting dua and sharing communal meals of ash reshteh, zereshk polo, and sheer berenj. Close by stand the historic caravanserais of the Silk Road, the bazaars of Semnan city, the cypress tree of Abarkuh famed for its great age, the Semnan jameh mosque with its seljuk minaret, and the Alborz foothills rising toward the forests of the Caspian slope.
