Tentang

Surau Al Mukhlisin serves the residents of Skudai, a bustling township on the outskirts of Johor Bahru that grew around the campus of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and has become a thriving suburb home to students, academics, engineers, and their families. The name Al Mukhlisin translates as the sincere ones, a Qur'anic designation for those who worship Allah with pure intention free of ostentation, and the surau invites its congregation to aspire to that quality of ikhlas in every act of devotion. The building follows the practical Malaysian surau template, a single storey concrete structure with a gently pitched roof of clay tiles, tall louvred windows admitting the tropical breeze, and a modest verandah where worshippers pause to remove their shoes. Inside the prayer hall, polished floor tiles are covered with long prayer carpets, a mihrab niche points toward the qibla, and a small mimbar stands ready for the occasional community lecture. Ablution facilities with rows of taps and benches adjoin the main hall, and a separate area is set aside for women worshippers. Skudai's young demographic, with many students renting rooms in nearby Taman Universiti and Taman Sri Pulai, means that the surau often hosts youth focused activities such as Qur'an study circles, seerah discussions, and weekend motivational talks by local ustadz. Older neighbourhood residents maintain the surau through volunteer gotong royong, sweeping floors, cleaning carpets, and ensuring the ablution taps work reliably. On Fridays many worshippers travel to the larger masjid jamek nearby, returning to Surau Al Mukhlisin for daily prayers. In Ramadan the surau fills each evening for tarawih, with families bringing home cooked dishes to share at iftar, and the soft sound of Qur'an recitation lingers in the air well past Isha, a gentle reminder of the blessed month's arrival in Skudai. Volunteers from the local taman often organise evening gotong royong work parties to tidy the surau grounds, repaint walls, and maintain the ablution pipework, an expression of the Malaysian community spirit that has long sustained such neighbourhood institutions and that instils in younger members a habit of practical service to the house of Allah, with the ustadz reminding helpers that every stone laid and every surface cleaned for the sake of the masjid earns a reward recorded with Allah regardless of how small the task may seem.
