Tentang

In the Moroccan town of Sidi Bennour within the Doukkala Abda region, the Mosque of Haj ben Abdellah, known in Arabic as the Mosque of the scholar al Haj ibn Abdullah, memorialises a local jurist whose teaching and charitable works shaped the religious life of this agricultural plain stretching toward the Atlantic coast. The Doukkala region is one of the great granaries of Morocco, its red soil producing wheat, sugar beet and vegetables under the careful irrigation systems developed since the colonial period, while its Muslim heritage reaches back to the Almoravid and Almohad dynasties whose scholars linked the Saharan trade routes with the Andalusian centres of learning. Sidi Bennour itself takes its name from a revered local saint whose shrine lies at the centre of the town, and the surrounding countryside is dotted with smaller mosques dedicated to scholars and benefactors whose memory is kept alive through their endowments. This mosque follows the classical Maghrebi style with a square minaret crowned by a lantern, a rectangular prayer hall supported by horseshoe arches on whitewashed columns, carved cedar ceilings painted with geometric motifs in red and green, and a courtyard paved in zellige mosaic with an ablution fountain at the centre. The mihrab is framed by delicate plasterwork and calligraphy from Surah al Mulk. Daily prayers gather farmers, schoolteachers and tradesmen, while Jumu'ah brings a fuller congregation for khutbah in Arabic often reflecting on the ethics of honest labour and family life. Ramadan fills the courtyard with iftars of harira, dates and sweet briouats, tarawih prayers led by reciters in the warsh reading and the vigil of laylat al Qadr. Eid mornings draw families in fresh djellabas. Visitors can pair a stop with the Atlantic beaches at El Jadida, the Portuguese cistern recognised by UNESCO and the fertile plains of the Doukkala. The annual moussem held in honour of Sidi Bennour draws families from across the Doukkala region to a week of Qur'an recitation, traditional music, horse riding demonstrations and communal meals of couscous prepared in enormous earthen pots. The mosque plays a central role in this celebration as the focal point for evening prayers and spiritual gatherings, with the minaret draped in green banners and the courtyard illuminated by lanterns casting a warm glow over worshippers seated on hand woven rugs from the Atlas villages of the interior.
