Kampung Penakub Hilir holds its Friday mosque close to the slow waters of the Mukah river, where the Melanau people of coastal Sarawak have gathered for generations of sago farming, fishing, and mosque building. Mukah is famous throughout Malaysian Borneo for its sago palms, its annual Kaul festival now reinterpreted within Islamic custom, and for a distinctive style of wooden architecture adapted to the hot and wet climate of the lowlands south of Sibu. The Jamek Mosque of Penakub Hilir reflects that local tradition: a raised timber floor to keep worshippers dry during the monsoon floods, a steep pitched roof with deep eaves to shed the heavy rain, and large shuttered windows that open to catch whatever breeze drifts in from the South China Sea. The mihrab is carved in the Sarawakian manner with delicate floral motifs borrowed from Melanau and Malay craftsmanship, and the minbar is a modest wooden staircase polished smooth by decades of Friday sermons. The congregation is made up largely of Melanau Muslim families who embraced Islam during the long period of Bruneian influence over coastal Sarawak, together with more recent arrivals from Sibu and Bintulu drawn by timber and oil palm work. Daily prayers are modest affairs, with the loudspeaker adhan carrying across the kampung in the calm of early dawn. Jumu'ah swells the attendance considerably, and during Ramadan the mosque organises nightly tarawih followed by small communal iftars of sago pearls, river fish, and kuih. Eid prayer spreads onto the open grass alongside the river, where children race in new clothes afterwards. Visitors reaching the mosque usually arrive through Mukah town and follow the coastal road south, passing oil palm estates and wooden longhouses built on stilts above the soft delta ground. Nearby attractions include the Lamin Dana cultural house, the Kaul festival grounds at Kala Dana beach, and the quiet fishing jetties where sago flour is still loaded onto small boats bound for Sibu market along the Rejang river system, offering visitors a glimpse of a coastal economy that has barely changed across several generations of Melanau life.
