Tentang

On a leafy street in Shorewood, the lakeside suburb just north of downtown Milwaukee in the American state of Wisconsin, the Islamic Society of Milwaukee University Center provides a welcoming prayer space, study centre, and gathering hall for Muslim students, professionals, and families across the greater Milwaukee area. The wider ISM organisation was founded in the 1970s by a small group of students and immigrants from several countries, and it has since grown into one of the largest Islamic organisations in Wisconsin, with several mosques, schools, and community projects serving tens of thousands of Muslims across the region. This university centre is one of the organisation's more specialised branches, focused on outreach to students at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee nearby.

Milwaukee itself, founded in 1846 at the confluence of three rivers flowing into Lake Michigan, has been home to Muslim communities since at least the early twentieth century, when workers from the Balkans, Lebanon, and South Asia began settling in the city's industrial quarters. Today the metro area is home to worshippers whose families trace roots to more than fifty countries, from Somalia and Bosnia to Pakistan, Indonesia, and the United States.

The building itself is modest and comfortable rather than monumental, occupying a carefully adapted space that includes a prayer hall, classrooms, a small library, and a kitchen used during community iftars in Ramadan. The prayer hall is simply finished, with a clean mihrab facing the qiblah, soft green carpet, and bookshelves lining the rear wall that hold Qur'anic commentaries, biographies of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, and collections of hadith and inspiring stories of his companions, may God be pleased with them.

Daily prayers gather students between classes, employees on lunch breaks, and older members of the neighbourhood, while Friday khutbahs, delivered in English with occasional Arabic passages, address the spiritual and practical concerns of Muslims living in a Midwestern American city. Visitors exploring the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Historic Third Ward, or the shores of Lake Michigan will find here dependable daily prayer times for Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha together with address and directions, and will be greeted with the open hospitality for which this community has become locally known.
