Across one of the main avenues of Sharjah, the cultural capital of the United Arab Emirates along the Arabian Gulf coast, the Sheikh Saoud al Qassimi Mosque carries the name of a senior member of the ruling al Qassimi family whose endowment has raised an elegant congregational hall for the faithful of the emirate. The al Qassimi dynasty has ruled Sharjah and the neighbouring emirate of Ras al Khaimah for centuries, and its members have long taken pride in patronising mosques, schools, museums, and libraries across their territories. Sharjah itself has earned a worldwide reputation as a centre of Arab and Islamic culture, with museums of Islamic civilisation, ancient manuscripts, classical Arabic literature, and heritage crafts scattered through its districts.
The practice of endowing mosques as a waqf, a perpetual charitable foundation, reaches back to the earliest days of Islam, when the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, and his noble companions, may God be pleased with them, founded mosques, dug wells, and purchased land for the benefit of the community. That tradition has shaped Muslim societies for more than fourteen centuries and continues to do so vividly in the cities of the Emirates today, where ruling families and private benefactors alike build and maintain the houses of worship.
Architecturally the prayer hall presents the Khaleeji tradition at its most refined, with walls of smooth cream plaster, a large central dome ornamented with calligraphic bands, semi domes at the corners, and a pair of slender minarets rising above the surrounding villas and commercial streets. Carved wooden doors open into a wide carpeted hall supported by slender columns clad in pale marble, and the mihrab is framed by calligraphic inscriptions drawn from the Qur'an. Chandeliers of modern Islamic design illuminate rows of patient worshippers.
Daily prayers gather Emirati families, expatriate professionals from South and Southeast Asia, workers from nearby warehouses, and travellers. Friday khutbahs are delivered in classical Arabic, often dwelling on gratitude for divine blessings, honesty in work, and the character of the Prophet and his companions. Visitors to Sharjah exploring the Heritage Area, the Islamic Civilization Museum, the Maraya Art Centre, or the Khalid Lagoon promenade will encounter here an elegant example of Khaleeji mosque craft together with a polite welcome from the resident attendants.
