Almsjd Alayrany, known in Arabic as Al-Masjid Al-Irani or the Iranian Mosque, serves the Shia Muslim community of Sharjah, many of whose members trace their heritage to Iran across the Gulf waters. The emirate of Sharjah, like its neighbor Dubai, has historically welcomed settlers from the Iranian coastal regions of Bushehr, Bandar Abbas, and Lingeh, whose trading networks and merchant families helped shape the commercial character of the southern Gulf long before oil revenues transformed the region. The mosque reflects Persian architectural sensibilities, with turquoise and cobalt tile work incorporating Safavid-style floral patterns, a distinctive bulbous dome painted in blue and white tiles, and tall minarets finished with rings of colored ceramic. Inside, the prayer hall features a wide expanse of richly woven Persian carpets, pendant chandeliers, and a mihrab niche decorated with intricate muqarnas plasterwork and Quranic calligraphy in the thuluth script. Unlike mosques serving primarily Sunni congregations, the mosque follows Twelver Shia traditions, with the adhan call including the phrase ashhadu anna Aliyyan waliyyullah and the prayer pattern including the turbah clay tablet upon which worshippers rest their foreheads during prostration. The mosque organizes majalis during the month of Muharram to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussein ibn Ali at Karbala, with recitations of elegies and narrations of the events leading up to and including the tenth day of Muharram, known as Ashura. These gatherings draw Shia Muslims from across Sharjah and from neighboring emirates, and the mosque provides free meals in keeping with the tradition of nazri food offerings. The mosque also holds prayer services during the month of Ramadan, including tarawih alternatives preferred by Shia Muslims who instead emphasize nightly duaa and Quran recitation. The Iranian Mosque stands as a reminder of the rich diversity within Islam and of the deep historical ties between the Arabian Peninsula and the Iranian plateau across the narrow waters of the Persian Gulf. The mosque has played an important role in supporting Iranian and Iranian-origin students studying in Sharjah and the wider UAE, offering free Arabic and Quranic instruction, mentorship pairings with established community members, and gatherings that help young people maintain cultural identity while building their lives in the Gulf region.
