Tentang

Carrying the honoured name of the Companion Safwan ibn al Mu'attal al Sulami, may God be pleased with him, the Safvan bin Muattal Mosque and Complex rises in the small town of Samsat in Adiyaman Province of southeastern Turkey. Samsat is the modern name for the ancient city of Samosata, capital of the Hellenistic kingdom of Commagene and a place of cultural exchange at the crossroads of the Seleucid, Roman, Byzantine, and Islamic worlds. The town once stood on a hill above the Euphrates, but when the waters of the Ataturk Dam rose in the late 1980s the historic settlement was submerged, and the community rebuilt itself nearby on higher ground.

Safwan ibn al Mu'attal was a gentle, pious Companion whose story is mentioned in the well known narration of al ifk, the slander that briefly troubled the household of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, until God sent down verses of the Qur'an vindicating the innocence of his beloved wife Aisha, may God be pleased with her. Safwan is remembered for his steadfast character, his love of learning, and his later martyrdom in the cause of Islam. Naming a mosque complex after him honours the quiet dignity of companions whose virtue was recorded more in private conduct than in public fame.

The complex, designed in the modern Turkish style, includes a spacious domed prayer hall, a tall cylindrical minaret in the Ottoman pattern, classrooms for Qur'anic education of children, a library, and a social hall used for weddings, funerals, and community meals. Inside the prayer hall, soft carpets and clear overhead lighting welcome the congregation, while the mihrab and minbar are carved in restrained calligraphy praising the oneness of God. On Fridays the khutbah gathers farmers, municipal workers, students, and elderly residents together in a single rhythm of devotion.

Visitors to the Adiyaman region will find on this page accurate daily prayer times for Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha at the Safvan bin Muattal complex in Samsat, together with its address, a precise map, and notes that help residents of the resettled town, travellers visiting the great stone heads of Mount Nemrut, and pilgrims tracing the lives of the Companions to join worship here with dignity throughout the year in every mood and season.
