Honouring the noble Companion Utbah ibn Ghazwan, may God be pleased with him, this mosque in the Salwa area of Hawalli governorate in the State of Kuwait carries a name that links the daily prayers of a coastal suburb to the heroic first generation of Islam. Kuwait has long been a land of traders, pearl divers, and ship builders whose dhows carried Arabian goods across the Indian Ocean. Salwa itself, facing the Gulf waters along the coastline south of Kuwait City, is today a district of mixed residential and commercial life, where families of Kuwaiti, Arab, and expatriate origin gather in neighbourhood masjids whose adhan carries over the sea breeze.

Utbah ibn Ghazwan was an early convert to Islam and one of the most trusted Companions of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family. He is especially remembered as the founder of Basra, appointed by the second caliph Umar, may God be pleased with him, to establish the garrison city from which the Muslim armies moved into the lands of the Sasanian empire. His reputation for humility, simplicity, and refusal to accumulate worldly goods became proverbial, and giving a Kuwaiti mosque his name preserves a memory of sincere service and modest leadership that every visitor carries home.

Architecturally, the mosque reflects contemporary Kuwaiti Gulf style. A pale stone and marble facade, a slender minaret, a dome of familiar crescent capped design, and arched entrances frame a cool carpeted interior with a tiled mihrab and a carved wooden minbar. Air conditioning eases the ferocious summer heat, chandeliers illuminate the rows of worshippers, and separate women's facilities and ablution rooms serve the mixed congregation of the district.

Kuwaiti families from Salwa, Arab expatriates from Egypt, Syria, Iraq, and the Maghreb, and South Asian workers gather here for the five daily prayers, for Jumu'ah, and for taraweeh during Ramadan, when long cloths are spread in the courtyard for communal iftar featuring harees, machboos, and dates. On this page visitors to Kuwait will find the current prayer times, the Salwa address, and helpful notes to assist every pilgrim, expatriate, student, or relative in locating this dignified Companion named masjid and sharing in its generous, welcoming, and deeply rooted Kuwaiti Gulf congregational life along the shoreline of Hawalli throughout the calendar year.
