Tentang

Mosquée de Cambaréne in Pikine serves the Cambaréne neighbourhood, one of the coastal quarters of Dakar with a Lebou fishing heritage and strong connections to the Layene Sufi brotherhood whose historical homeland lies along this stretch of the Atlantic coast. The Lebou people, indigenous to the Cape Verde peninsula where Dakar now stands, have long combined their traditional livelihoods of fishing and coastal trade with Islamic faith, and the distinctive Layene brotherhood founded by Seydina Limamou Laye in the late nineteenth century emerged specifically from this Lebou community. Cambaréne, like Yoff and Ngor nearby, preserves this Lebou Layene heritage, and mosques in the area reflect these distinctive roots. The structure features a traditional Senegalese mosque form with a dome or domes, a minaret from which the muadhin calls the adhan five times daily, whitewashed walls reflecting the bright coastal sun, and an interior prayer hall carpeted and oriented toward the qibla. A mihrab, mimbar, separate women's section, and ablution facilities complete the essential features. Programmes include the five daily prayers, Friday Jumuah with khutbah in Wolof and Arabic, Qur'an and tajwid classes for children and adults, Arabic language instruction, Islamic studies in the Maliki tradition characteristic of West Africa, Layene dhikr and wird sessions appropriate to the brotherhood's devotional practice, marriage solemnisation, funeral rites, and welfare distribution. The adhan called five times daily carries across the coastal landscape, mingling with the sounds of the Atlantic surf and the calls of fishermen returning with their catch. Ramadan at Mosquée de Cambaréne brings nightly tarawih prayers, community iftars breaking the fast with traditional Lebou and wider Senegalese dishes as the sun sets over the ocean, Qur'an khatm sessions, and itikaf during the blessed final ten nights. Fishermen from the Cambaréne community often offer dedicated duas at the mosque before setting out to sea and upon returning safely, a practice reflecting the deep integration of Islamic faith with the particular livelihood of the Lebou coastal people whose lives have always depended on the often treacherous Atlantic waters and on the mercy of Allah who has placed the fish of the sea at their disposal as a source of sustenance and blessing.
