Mosquée 2 in Pikine, a densely populated working class suburb northeast of Dakar that grew explosively in the late twentieth century as rural migrants poured into the Senegalese capital region seeking work and housing, serves as one of the numbered neighbourhood mosques that dot this bustling community. Pikine's rapid unplanned growth has produced a lively urban environment where poverty and enterprise coexist, where markets spill into streets, and where hundreds of mosques serve the overwhelmingly Muslim population across its many quarters. Mosques in such neighbourhoods often receive simple designations like Mosquée 1, Mosquée 2, and so on, reflecting their role as numbered community facilities rather than named institutions, though each develops its own character and loyal congregation over time. Mosquée 2 in Pikine serves its immediate neighbourhood with the five daily prayers called by the muadhin from the mosque's minaret, the Friday Jumuah gathering drawing worshippers from across the surrounding streets, Qur'an and tajwid classes for children learning to recite the noble book, Islamic education in the Maliki tradition of West Africa, Arabic language instruction, marriage solemnisation, funeral rites, zakat distribution, and welfare services for needy families. The structure is typical of Senegalese neighbourhood mosques with a modest dome, a minaret, whitewashed walls, and an interior prayer hall carpeted and oriented toward the qibla. A mihrab, mimbar, separate women's section, and ablution facilities complete the essential features. The mosque reflects the deep devotion of Senegalese Muslims to the Sufi brotherhoods, with affiliations to the Tijaniyya, Mouridiyya, Layeniyya, or Qadiriyya orders often shaping community observances. Ramadan at Mosquée 2 brings the community together for nightly tarawih prayers, shared iftars featuring Senegalese dishes like thieboudienne and yassa, Qur'an khatm sessions, and itikaf during the blessed final ten nights as worshippers seek Laylatul Qadr. Despite its simple designation, Mosquée 2 has developed a distinctive character over the decades it has served the Pikine community, with a particularly dedicated muadhin whose Fajr adhan has been the wakeup call for three generations of residents in the surrounding streets, and with a history of accommodating overflow crowds during Ramadan that has required gradual expansions to the prayer hall and forecourt.
