Tentang

Mausolé de Seydina Issa Rohou Lahi in Pikine houses the resting place of one of the most revered figures of the Layene Sufi order, Seydina Issa Rohou Lahi, son of the order's founder Seydina Limamou Laye. The Layene, one of the distinctive Senegalese Sufi brotherhoods, emerged in the late nineteenth century when Seydina Limamou Laye, a Lebou fisherman from the Yoff area of Dakar, declared himself the awaited Mahdi in the Islamic eschatological tradition and gathered a following among the Lebou coastal communities. His son Seydina Issa Rohou Lahi, whose name signifies him as the Spirit of Allah according to Layene belief, succeeded his father as spiritual leader and carried forward the order's distinctive teachings and practices. The mausoleum in Pikine, like the principal shrine of Seydina Limamou Laye in Yoff Layene, serves as a pilgrimage destination for Layene adherents and curious visitors, with gatherings on anniversaries of the saint's birth and passing drawing large crowds for prayers, recitations, and communal meals. The structure typically features a domed tomb chamber in characteristic Senegalese mausoleum style with whitewashed walls and Islamic calligraphic decoration, surrounded by an enclosed courtyard and an attached prayer hall for visitors to perform their obligatory prayers. Pilgrims arrive to offer salawat upon the Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa alihi wa sallam, recite sections of the Qur'an, and seek barakah through the spiritual presence of the saint, following the widespread Sufi practice of tawassul through the awliya that characterises much of West African Islamic devotion. Ramadan sees heightened activity at the mausoleum with visitors combining their pilgrimages with fasting devotion, while the annual gamou celebrations commemorating the saint's life bring thousands of Layene disciples for grand communal observances of prayer, feasting, and remembrance. The Layene calendar is punctuated by several annual commemorations at the Seydina Issa Rohou Lahi mausoleum, including the specific anniversary days of his birth, his spiritual succession, and his passing, each observed with gatherings of varying scale that collectively maintain the vital living connection between the contemporary Layene community and the spiritual lineage that their order traces to Seydina Limamou Laye and onward through his son and subsequent khalifas.
