Sudan's capital triangle of Khartoum, Omdurman and Khartoum Bahri hosts countless teaching mosques known as majamii, and the complex dedicated to Shaykh al Sawi for the memorisation of the Noble Qur'an and the Islamic sciences, block fifty nine in Omdurman, forms part of that living network of quranic schools. The word majmu signifies a gathered complex, combining a prayer hall, dormitories for visiting students, teaching rooms, a reference library and a covered courtyard where circles of huffaz recite through the afternoon. Shaykh Ahmad al Sawi al Khalwati, may God have mercy upon him, was a renowned Egyptian scholar of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries whose glosses on the Jalalayn tafsir and on the devotional litany known as the Hizb al Bahr are studied across the Sudanese teaching tradition. Sudan itself preserves one of the deepest continuous Qur'anic memorisation cultures on earth, producing qari whose recitations are broadcast on radio across the Muslim world and whose technique threads back through the riwaya of al Duri and al Dawri. Architecturally the building combines a broad whitewashed prayer hall with a pitched tin roof that repels the fierce sun, a modest dome rendered in cream plaster, a square brick minaret and a courtyard planted with neem and date palm. Inside, woven mats cover the floor beneath a green carpet, wooden rahla stands for Qur'anic copies are stacked along one wall and calligraphic panels name the teaching shaykhs who have served here. Daily prayers are observed with care, Jumu'ah gathers worshippers from the surrounding block, and Ramadan evenings extend tarawih through twenty rakah recited from memory by senior students preparing for ijaza. Eid mornings overflow into the unpaved street, and zakat is distributed through the complex network to orphans and widows of the district. Visitors should dress modestly, remove shoes on the sandy threshold and avoid photographing the children at study. Landmarks within reach include the Khalifa House museum, the weekly dhikr at the Hamed al Nil open air ground and the merging waters of the two Niles at the Mogran where Sudanese families gather each weekend to picnic beside the slow brown current that has shaped their agriculture, their poetry and their piety across countless generations of faithful continuity.
