Recognised locally as the Old Mosque of al Thawra, Block Six, this venerable masjid in Omdurman belongs to the original layout of the al Thawra district whose name, meaning the Revolution, commemorates the Sudanese independence era. The epithet al atiq, the ancient or venerable, is reserved for the oldest mosques of a given quarter, and it carries significant prestige among the surrounding community whose families regard attendance there as continuing the devotional legacy of their grandparents. Al Thawra was laid out in the twentieth century as the population of Omdurman expanded beyond its old walled centre, and each of its numbered blocks developed around a central mosque and market. Omdurman itself remains one of the most characteristically Sudanese cities, a vast expanse of sandy streets, souks and tombs on the western bank of the Nile, facing Khartoum across the confluence of the White and Blue Niles. Sudan's Islamic heritage draws on the preaching of Arab migrants from the Hijaz and Egypt, the work of tariqa masters and spiritual guides whose followings reshaped village and city piety, and the scholarly tradition recorded in the Tabaqat of Ibn Dayf Allah, may God have mercy upon him. The regional architectural tradition along riverine Sudan uses mud brick walls whitewashed in pale hues, modest domes, square minarets of elegant slenderness, and sandy courtyards shaded by neem or palm trees. Five daily prayers gather neighbours who walk from the surrounding streets, Friday assemblies swell the hall with families in crisp jalabiyyas and tobes, tarawih through Ramadan is accompanied by the distinct rhythmic dhikr that characterises Sudanese devotional life, and After Eid prayers worshippers move to visit relatives and the shared meal of asida and mullah. Khalwa classes meet in the late afternoons. Travellers visiting the souk of Omdurman, the Khalifa's tomb or the Mahdi's mausoleum will encounter in Block Six a quieter expression of the city's old devotional energy. Volunteer youth groups sweep the surrounding sandy lanes each Friday morning before the jumuah prayer, continuing a tradition of civic responsibility in which young men and women serve the mosque while learning the practical virtues of humility, cooperation and shared labour.
